The answer is that we let our minds go to the things that please us. We do not realize that there is greater pleasure in the presence of the Lord then there is in those things that are temporary.
To overcome we have to do what Paul suggests:
Col 3:1 — Col 3:3
Colossians 3
IF THEN you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing His resurrection from the dead], aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.
For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God.
Isn't it great when we get into the presence of the Lord and feel His love and joy that only He can give. We step away from that and after a few days we have this world around us bombarding us with troubles and trials and we begin to forget how great it was to be in God's presence.
So, it becomes an everyday battle to get back to setting our affections on heavenly things instead of all the things around us.
Lord, thank you for every blessing you have given to me and every promise of a blessing that is to come. Help me today to set my love on you and what you have in store for me and get my mind off the things around me so I am not tempted to go back to what you have delivered me from.
