How said that this is a common thing in our world today. People are trying to escape their problems by using drugs, alcohol and sex to forget real life. But when that is all over, real life is still there.
Jesus had a conversation about this with a woman at a well in Samaria who came at a time of day when no one else was around. It was not the time of day when people came to the well to draw water.
She just didn't want to have to deal with people looking down their noses at her or making her feel bad about herself because of the choices she had made. She was trying to escape reality.
Jesus steps on the scene and brings reality to her, but also helps her deal with that reality. Then He gives her an answer on how to deal with reality.
Jn 4:10 — Jn 4:14
Jesus answered her, If you had only known and had recognized God’s gift and Who this is that is saying to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him [instead] and He would have given you living water.
She said to Him, Sir, You have nothing to draw with [no drawing bucket] and the well is deep; how then can You provide living water? [Where do You get Your living water?]
Are You greater than and superior to our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well and who used to drink from it himself, and his sons and his cattle also?
Jesus answered her, All who drink of this water will be thirsty again.
But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) [continually] within him unto (into, for) eternal life.
When we are dealing with something difficult in life, we need to drink of God's goodness to us and ask Him to help us through it instead of hiding from it. It is never truly hidden.
Lord, I give you everything today and ask you to give me that living water that only you can supply, knowing that it will help me and fulfill my every desire. Help me to face the realities of life.
